My name is Vidyamala Burch and I have been practising meditation for more than 30 years. I have also lived with a spinal injury for 40 years with physical pain and severe mobility limitations. Learning to work with my mind means I now have a good life, even though my body can be challenging. I’m passionate about offering everything I have learned on my own journey to help others who suffer in one way or another. I hope you find some help on this site.
I started running mindfulness courses for people living with pain and illness in 2001. This sowed the seeds for Breathworks which I co-founded as a Social Enterprise in 2004. We offer training and courses in mindfulness and compassion and are one of the leading mindfulness organisations in the UK and internationally. We have teachers in more than 25 countries worldwide.
03 Mindfulness for Health This is the approach I have developed to help people cultivate mindfulness and compassion when they live with any sort of health condition. I have created an eight-week course that is outlined in the award-winning Mindfulness for Health book that I co-authored in 2013. This won first prize at the British Medical Association book awards in 2014 (Popular Medicine category). The book is released in the USA under the title You Are Not Your Pain.
04 Mindfulness for Women
I co-wrote the Mindfulness for Women book to help women from all walks of life manage this crazy modern world we find ourselves in. It contains lots of case histories as well as the practice and science of mindfulness and compassion.
It also includes the diary of my co-author Clair Irvin describing her experiences learning to meditate. It’s very accessible, engaging and often hilarious.
The Breathworks Foundation is the charitable wing of Breathworks. The foundation raises money to ensure that no one is excluded from Breathworks simply due to costs. I know all too well the financial struggle of living with a disability and I’m passionate about making sure that anyone can access our courses and teacher training, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Thank you Amanda C de C Williams for my nomination and citation and all those working so hard for pain at the British Pain Society.
A big congratulations to Professor Kate Seers who also received honorary membership for her years of astounding work".
I recently had a wonderful interview with my friend Rick Hanson for his Foundations of Wellbeing site on chronic pain and how those who experience it can flourish. Rick is brilliant, and it was a joy to speak with him. You can watch it here:
